The Rise of Disaster Capitalism features Naomi Klein explaining the ideas and research behind her bestselling book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. In this riveting lecture and interview, Klein challenges and exposes the popular myth of the free market economy’s peaceful global victory. Around the world there are people with power who are cashing in on chaos, exploiting bloodshed and catastrophe to brutally implement their policies. They are the shock doctors. From Chile in 1973 to Iraq today, this is the chilling tale of how a few are making a killing while more are getting killed.

FAVELA RISING documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

Showing: The Price of Pleasure features voices from this hugely profitable industry, candidly discussing the role pornography has played in shaping sexual imaginations and relationships. Are you a star?

Pogo has survived these six or so years on the blood sweat and tears (sometimes of joy) volunteered by the likes of you. Hardly anyone that has got involved in Pogo has come from a professional catering or administrative background. All that is needed is a passion to do some thing positive for veganism, animal rights and co-operative decision making.

Every year as summer comes around Pogo hits a crisis of staffing as those who wish to travel dissapear and we wonder ‘How the Dickens are we gonna replace her’. Usually some new star appears to brighten our lives, serve coffee, bake cakes and ask visitors ever so nicely to lock their bikes up outside.

Right now we need to see a few stars coming over the horizon or we will have to close on the days we can not fill our requirement of three volunteers per shift. So please if you can offer some of your precious time we would treasue it as most valuable.  Call us on 02085331214, email or leave your details as a comment.

The Secret Society of Vegans, who were involved in the birth of Pogo and originally was set up to help finance Pogo has gone on to become the proud owners of a Vegan shop  all of their own. It’s a vegan shoppers paradise with everything from vegan mugs to vegan junk food! – not that we at Pogo approve of junk food of course but hey it takes all sorts! Anyway the shop is just up the Caledonian Road from Kings Cross, go past the wonderful Housmans Bookshop and its a little further up on the same side. See the link below for more info.

Zapatista coffee at Pogo

Chiapas in Mexico produces one of the best coffees in the world, mainly grown in the mountains. Coffee is Mexico’s main export. Mexico is in fact the world’s fourth largest producer of coffee in the world, and the main producer of organic coffee.

In Mexico more than 3 million people depend on the production of coffee and on its exportation. 91.7% are small producers with less than five hectares of land, and more than 60% of these are indigenous peoples. The other 8.3% own a number of enormously extended estates that are the fruits of occupations of indigenous lands; these occupations have been promoted and supported by the government.

The EZLN commonly known as the Zapatistas has developed social and political projects: building, from the bottom up, a society where the Maya people can enjoy autonomy, safeguarding their own idioms and culture, and organising their own access to education, health, and land, through forms of direct democracy.

One of these projects is the creation of small cooperatives that produce the “Cafe Rebelde”  or “Zapatista coffee”. The organisation of these cooperatives has strengthened and improved access to the land and the quality of life overall.

Pogo therefore uses and sells Zapatista coffee that we get from Active Distribution who in turn buy it from Café Libertad in Hamburg who deal directly with the cooperatives in Mexico as an act of solidarity with the indigenous peoples struggle in Chiapas Mexico and also because it tastes so damn good!

You can buy 250g bags of ground Zapatista coffee from Pogo for £3.50 each or get two for £6.50.
